If you're into bodybuilding, you should probably know that all gym machines suck compared to bars/halters. Do it like pro, get the results that you may be looking for.

I agree with you that free weights are better than machines but for someone who never lift any weights in their lives I believe that’s better to start with machines, so in my opinion they have a place. However, it’s sad to see that in any gym the machines have more space than free weights because if you want to advance there isn’t any other way then free weights.

Sadly, everyone today is looking for the miracle machine! Free weights are easy to keep at home; slide them under the bed or put them in the closet when you're done. Simple, weight resistance training at home a few times a week can really help, whether trying to lose weight or just tone-up.

Absolutely right. Free weights are superior because of synergistic muscle effect and also increased coordination and balance. As an ex-manager of a chain health club, I can tell you that the reason we see all these machines is that they are considered a selling point. The uninformed novice doesn't realize that a top trainer with few tools can do much more than a mo with a room full of machines.

I don't go to the gym, I don't think it has many advantages over working out at home. I use only dumbbells, push ups and stuff like that that doesn't use anything specific.

In all of my workout routines I've always seemed to perform better with free weights. My body feels like it has a more equalized workout versus the times I've used machines. I agree, free weights are the best choice.

It is sad. You would think that with the cost of machines vs. free weights that it would encourage gym owners to opt for more free weights.

I don't agree with the above poster that those who are new to fitness should start off with machines and progress to free weights. Many of the exercises you perform with free weights are identical to movements performed in daily life without the assistance of a machine. I think it's a disservice to dumb down the nervous system with machine exercises instead of teaching proper form from the get go with free weights.

Great read. I have always been a fan of using nautilus machines but do keep some free weights handy around the house. Part of the ritual for me is actually heading over to the gym. I still use a few free weights there as well though.
