I have used free weights for 25 years to maintain good fitness, but I have recently gone to resistance bands. The bands allow for an array of angles and I can duplicate the weight exercises and do not spend time changing plates. The bands are far easier on my joints and the exercise is smooth allowing increased resistance as you go through the range of motion. If you are interested, the best quality product on the market is "Bodylastics".

As most hotels have now removed weights from their gyms, the bodylastics gym makes a great travel companion.

In an ideal world using both is great, but if you've only got fifty quid to spend and you want one or the other, I'd buy bands simply because you get more for your money... more versatility and more resistance. At the gym I use free weights and cables, but I use bands for at home and when I'm training.
