I was searching the web looking for answers because I had questions. You answered the main one. I was 341 lbs Feb 2009. I am currently 198 lbs. I lost 130 pounds within a 1 year period. The first 10 plus pounds took months to lose. The weightloss had been up and down. I was told to lose 1-2 lbs a week and like clockwork, it happened that way. But after constant exercise and healthier eating habits, I now lose 1-2 pounds daily. I was trying to figure out if it was healthy. This article helped. I can't contol the fact that I lose so much daily. I work out for 45 minutes twice a day. 35 of those minutes is a basic yoga dvd, the rest is crunches. I eat five times a day. I average weightloss of 9-11 pounds a week. Finally getting the answer that it is okay, really made me feel a lot better, thank you!!! I feel relieved.

My view on weight loss is that it is good to jump start your weigh reduction campaign by getting on a diet that may be temporary. But over a period of time you have to have a change in total lifestyle which includes eating smartly and adopting a long term exercise regimen.

Its a life long process, not doubt about it

I just love this post! It all depends on the person, some people who are quick to loose the weight just give up after the first few weeks. I have seen this time and time again. You have to know yourself and figure out which is the best method will work best for you.

A very well motivated post but let me ADD a few things to this. I agree with you to some extent that the you don't have to stick to th 1-2 pounds a week IDEA. However, let's look at things in a broader view. 1-2 pounds a week is easy and if you are overweight, a 20 minute walk with eating healthy will help you lose atleast this much. REASON?? Well a 20 minute walk burns on average 100 - 300 calories in 20 minutes depending on your fat%, muscle mass and intensity. The fitness EXPERTS say that some exercise and a healthy diet (i.e. what you pointed out above) will help you burn about 500 extra calories a day. In 7 days that is 3500 cals. This is equal to 1 pound of fat. You may burn calories from carbs and protein as well, so it in not necessary that you will lose only fat, but that's a different issue.

If you are very overweight like people in the biggest loser, then surely you will lose a lot more than 1-2 pounds a week because they workout for atleast 2 hours a day, use a lot of calories and eat healthy plus they have more fat to lose. The thing is, for beginners, 1-2 pound advice it perfect, because if people are told you can lose as much as you want. Instead of taking small steps, they will cut down their calories by 1000 cals a day and jog or walk for hours and hours. Now this isn't safe. The 1-2 pounds guide is to give starters a realistic goal. Otherwise if you say sky is the limit, they try and not acheive it, you will find that people will get de-motivated. Hope this was clear!!!

Excellent post! There are many who believe that losing weight fast will lead to a return to obesity. Regardless of how fast or slow you lose the weight, the battle is always in the mind. A return to obesity is by choice. We make the choice to put food in our mouth that we shouldn't. Hard to stay motivated when you aren't losing weight. 1 to 2 pounds per week? Depending on your situation, if you have the ability to exercise and say no to foods that aren't good for you then you will lose weight efficiently. Long story short, if you want to lose weight faster, burn some more calories... get active!
